The meaning of Google
As new competitors aim to reshape the Web and new products change its focus, what does it mean to be Google? The question of meaning has been an easy one to answer for most of Google’s history. Google meant search: Google’s own dictionary application defines “Google” as a verb meaning “to search.” (The folks at Merriam-Webster concurred.) And Google’s brand reached those heights through a very conscious decision to forgo the traditional brand advertising that competitors like Yahoo, Lycos, Ask Jeeves, Microsoft, and others embraced.

Lycos To Relaunch Search Services In Europe, For Whatever Reason
Remember Lycos? Well, believe it or not, they’re not dead yet. In fact, the search engine / web portal has just announced that it has regained the rights to use the trademarked brand names “Lycos” and “Hotbot” within the European territory. In case that confuses you: Lycos Europe had an exclusive license to use those terms within Europe under an agreement dating back to 1997 when the company was formed as part of a joint venture and started up European operations independently from Lycos.

Lycos Dropping Lycos Mail, Tripod February 15
Well it looks like one of the last of the old school search companies is closing its email service and website creation and hosting service Tripod, according to emails sent to users. The plug will be fully pulled and all data will be gone, so if you are still using any of these services you have about 4 weeks to grab all essential information before it is history. Lycos once was a popular destination. I used it along with Alta Vista in my early forays in the search space. The company was no longer in the top ten of email providers – with an estimated global user base of under 500,000, according to TechCrunch.

Politics and Financial Crisis Dominated the Year in Search
Obama was on the minds of the U.S. in terms of search in 2008, according to Google. But the fastest-rising search term for Google’s global results in its Zeitgeist was Sarah Palin. That’s what’s listed in this year’s top search term recaps from Google, Yahoo, AOL, Ask.com, and Lycos. The election weighed heavily in several categories including fastest rising, overall searches, influential women, and top news stories. The financial bailout ranked high on search, too. On Google people searched for “financial crisis,” “bailout,” and “mortgage crisis,” while Yahoo saw top economic terms such as “oil prices,” “gold prices,” and “Sallie Mae.” AOL visitors looked for financial terms “Wachovia,” “Washington Mutual,” “Merrill Lynch,” and “AIG,” among others. The top news stories on Lycos related to the economic collapse and bailout, though stories of the death of actor Heath Ledger, and the Eliot Spitzer scandal were also popular.

Christmas Gifts Ideas from Lycos Before Thanksgiving Day
Okay, I understand that we’re all trying to “give a jolt” to the economy. But I was still surprised today when Lycos provided a list of Christmas gift ideas two days before Thanksgiving Day. Aren’t we all supposed to wait until Black Friday? Nevertheless, for shoppers who like planning ahead — or for online retailers and etailers looking for what will be hot this holiday season — Lycos just announced its ninth annual list of the most popular toys and video games, based on web search activity.

Google Knows About 1 Trillion Web Items
How big is Google’s web index? Google hasn’t said for years and still isn’t saying — but it is blogging today about how it “knows” of 1 trillion web-based items. Joy, we haven’t had a search engine talk about pages it knows about to confuse things since the Lycos days. Glad to have Google making the first shot to take us back into the search engine size wars of old.
