We’ve been getting a lot of questions in Q+A and on the road at events like last week’s Miva Merchant conference, Online Marketing Summit and the YCombinator conference about how to properly paginate results for search engines. In this post, we’ll cover the dangers, opportunities and optimization tactics that can best ensure success. The best part? These practices aren’t just good for SEO, they’re great for usability and user experience too!Why is Pagination an SEO Issue?Pagination, the practice of segmenting links to content on multiple pages, affects two critical elements of search engine…

MIVA Direct has partnered with Meebo to integrate live social community features into the ALOT Toolbar and ALOT Home. The technology will facilitate real-time interactions among users in chat rooms across the ALOT network. Chris Dessi, MIVA Direct’s VP of Sales and Business Development, explains, “Since launching ALOT we’ve been building up users across a broad range of different verticals – our ALOT Toolbar for Recipes, for example, currently has over 335,000 live users1. We believe there are significant potential benefits in offering vertically focused chat rooms that enable these like-minded users to communicate directly with each other, and believe that Meebo is a great application to help us kick-start this process.”

Good to see Miva hanging in their with this project. Not sure why they’re doing it, though…

Seems Microsoft is moving to finalize the renaming of Live Search to Kumo, according to LiveSide.net. The possibility has been discussed at various times this year. Renaming and branding moves by search engines have not had much luck. Ask.coms removal of Jeeves seemed to hurt them, FindWhat and eSpotting merger and rename to Miva definitely impacted the companies, so there is data for not making the changes. True GoClick to Overture went okay – but then they had a great product in a growing market – just like BackRub and Google…. but that was really prepublic launch.

We just think its a dumb move…

Blinkx, a British video search compan that already tried to acquire online advertising firm Miva, announced Wednesday that it is placing another bid to acquire the company. Only this time around, Blinkx’s offer is just $0.55 per share for Miva–less than half its original offer of $1.20 per share. “Blinkx believes the proposal is highly attractive for Miva shareholders, particularly in light of issues in the Miva business and current market conditions,” a release from Blinkx reads. “Blinkx’s proposal represents a 108 percent premium above the closing price of Miva common stock of $0.2643 on November 18, 2008, and a 39 percent premium over the average closing price for the 30 days prior to November 18, 2008.”

Digital advertising company MIVA has released an update of their toolbar, enabling customizable features. MIVA is also launching a customizable homepage and a widget site, ALOT Buttons, for their customers. The ALOT brand launched in the last quarter of 2007 with the theme “Make the Internet Easy.” ALOT products aggregate proprietary content and third party content across vertically themed toolbars and homepages. “We believe that growth of the ALOT brand to date is due largely to our vertical product strategy and believe that today’s launch is a natural progression that will enable us to further build on this success,” commented Peter Corrao, President and Chief Executive Officer, MIVA. “With our new personalized products, users can continue to install vertical toolbars and homepages optimized for their specific interests, but can now also personalize their products by adding widgets from our expanding widget library.”

Its the ghost of Miva, come back to haunt us…!

MIVA has announced plans to launch a new online advertising platform. The new platform will incorporate MIVA’s existing Pay-Per-Click solution and add online advertising formats for a more comprehensive offering. The platform will be launched through a phased roll-out. The first phase will be a beta release, expected in the fourth quarter of 2008. “As the online advertising market continues to mature, the needs of advertisers and publishers are also evolving. MIVA’s new platform is intended to address these needs through completely updated technology that we believe will provide a significantly enhanced set of features and online marketing options for advertisers and publishers,” commented S. MIVA, who yesterday rejected an acquisition bid from online video search engine blinkx, has posted a $6.5 million loss for the second quarter of 2008. MIVA CEO and President Peter Corrao tried to keep things in perspective for shareholders and Wall Street: “The most recent quarter has been a transitional one for our business. We are encouraged by the results of the growth initiatives that we’ve been working towards, such as the continued roll-out of our ALOT toolbar and homepage brand and the continued growth of destination sites like Spill.com. In addition, our new MIVA Media technology platform remains on schedule for a US release in the fourth quarter of this year.”

So that would be why they were the subject of a takeover bid earlier in the week…

Last week, online video search engine blinkx, apparently feeling inspired by Microsoft, made an unsolicited bid to acquire online advertising company, MIVA. MIVA has responded by saying Thanks but No Thanks. Here’s the official word: “After careful evaluation, the MIVA Board believes that blinkx’s proposal significantly undervalues MIVA’s assets, including our technology, brand recognition and network,” said Larry Weber, MIVA’s Chairman of the Board. “We don’t believe that the proposal, as currently constituted, is in the best interests of our shareholders. The Board of Directors continues to evaluate all of MIVA’s strategic options in the context of our industry and the broader business environment and remains committed to evaluating and considering offers that maximize shareholder value.”

Its good to see Miva will continue to be their own man. Miva are one of the few independent PPC engines out there, so its good they keep that way. Choice is always good, and its good see we’ve got more than just Yahoo as an alternative.

Blinkx, the video search engine and video search technology firm, is moving to acquire search advertising and contextual ad firm Miva, which has been hit hard on the stock market. Miva closed at $.78 a share yesterday, and according to Allen Stern at CenterNetworks, Blinkx is offering $1.20 a share in cash for Miva. Miva, which also owns SearchFeed, is well known in the search community as being a rebranded version of FindWhat, which was one of the first paid search engines which used Goto.com’s example of a paid search auction to bid for placement. Miva is also well known for its in-content link advertising and toolbar distribution partnerships. (more…)
