Facebook Search War With Google Mostly Sound And Fury
The people running Facebook are an ambitious crew; they see Facebook as a successor to Google in many respects. In fact many of the executives used to work at Google, including CTO Bret Taylor, COO Sheryl Sandberg, Advertising VP David Fischer and Communications VP Elliot Schrage, among others. As a search property Facebook has historically been [...]

Google Books case still a run-on sentence
At this point, Google and the Authors Guild must feel like they are in a James Joyce novel. The Google Books case drags on with no hint of when the six-year dispute might finally be settled, four months after a final hearing was supposed to decide the issue once and for all. Google and the plaintiffs–representatives of authors and publishers–agreed to settle the massive case in October 2008 but delays after delays have prevented Google from offering out-of-print yet copyright-protected books in its Google Book Search product.

Photographers Group To Sue Google Over Book Deal

Facebook Search Gains Boost Bing & Motorola Puts Bing On Chinese Android Handsets
I’m my discussion yesterday of the comScore search data I neglected to point out (as GigaOm has) that Facebook saw 10 percent search query growth in the past month. That’s significant and it validates an argument I’ve long made that Facebook could turn out to be a meaningful player in search, which would in turn [...]

Facebook Searches Grow by 10% in February
ComScore has just released its February search engine rankings data. And while there’s nothing new in terms of who is on top, who gained and who lost, what’s surprising about it is that among all the online properties where searches are conducted other than the five major search engines, Facebook gained a significant amount of searches in February.Yes, it seems…

Waiting Game Begins On Google Book Search Settlement
The dust has settled from last week’s Fairness Hearing on the proposed Google Book Search, and now all parties are playing a waiting game. Judge Denny Chin began the hearing by announcing — to no one’s surprise — that he wouldn’t be announcing a decision during or immediately after the hearing. According to the Wall [...]

Last words? Google Books to get final hearing
A federal judge will start writing the ending to the Google Books saga on Thursday, finally paving the way for a resolution of the five-year dispute. Representatives from Google, groups representing authors and publishers, privacy advocates, and competitors will appear before Judge Denny Chin on Thursday in New York to argue–for possibly the last time–over whether Chin should approve Google’s class action settlement with the authors and publishers over Google Book Search. If approved, the settlement would allow Google to display books with varying degrees of access, sell books directly from its site, and launch an institution subscription to its library of over 12 million books.
