In my latest Search Engine Journal article, Information Architecture– Rocket Science Simplified, I break down the concepts of site navigation as it relates to SEO for the purpose of strengthening sectional and page level focus. But it’s more than just about focus and I wasn’t sure if I was clear enough on exactly why you need to care so much about the topic, or why you need to see and think outside the box of what might be your own agenda as relates to navigation factors. While site navigation can, and absolutely does have an impact on how well the search engines can most accurately determine…

I’ve been doing SEO for as long as I can remember. I rarely stop to look at the distance I’ve made since I started; more notably, the change in the SEO space and the change in my own philosophies. But when I do stop and look, I realize that I’m even more excited about SEO today than ever before. I believe heavily in the significance of social media. Even though the blogosphere blows up with “SEO is dead” posts at least three times a year, I don’t think it is. On the contrary, I think it’s merging with social media. From TrustRank to editorial content to personalization…

If you have an extra hour in your very busy workday day, don’t spend it fine-tuning your site for algo search, or optimizing your SEM campaigns for efficiency, ROI or profitability. Spend it building out and executing on your social media strategy. I know, shocking advice coming from an old search jockey like me, but [...]

Not so long ago, there were only a few companies out there that bothered to customize their websites for foreign markets. Those who chose to do so made minimal effort—they simply translated their English copy into the local language and started doing business. Their incentives to create more sophisticated, tailored offerings was minimal; [...]

At a small or medium sized company, you might be part of a very small team with responsibility for SEO, or you may the only person – and it might not even be your full time job. In these cases, people often tell me that the greatest struggle is finding time and resources to do link building for their site. Rather than pitching your boss to hire a new team member to assist with SEO and link building, you may have more success (and get more value out of) asking for a little time with members of different teams from different disciplines. These staff may be able to give…

For a moon or two now, there has been this debate about whether link-builders are, in actual fact, SEO’s or whether they should sit in a different realm — sitting more closely with business development or PR. Much of what link-builders do, after all, is relationship focussed, prospecting and of course results driven — this to me sounds very much like a salesmanship. But it’s more than that — it’s the full plethora of what true SEO can deliver for a business. Now, I think in many respects, competent link-builders are the most all-rounded SEO’s in the sector (not simply…

Google is experimenting with new local search results formats, a move that appears to be good for consumers but devastating for the SEO of online business directories as well as for some small-to-medium businesses.

Hi. My name is Tom and I have a problem. Actually I have a lot of problems, but none are more pressing or more relevant to you than how SEO has affected my perception of the internet. More specifically, SEO has ruined how I use the internet so I hope that sharing my story will [...]

Yellow Pages is set to benefit from the global growth of digital offerings and will derive 39% of its revenues from “video, SEM/SEO, mobile, social and reputation management” by 2014, according to a study by research firm BIA/Kelsey. In the U.S., BIA/Kelsey sees strong growth coming from what it calls “the more established digital offerings, including Web sites, SEM and video” although reputation management, SEO, social and mobile should be the main expansion drivers. The expected compound annual growth rate (CGAR) for digital revenues stands at 17.2% in the U.S., the research firm said in a statement.
