AOL Sees Double-Digit Drops in Ad Revenues in Q1
Time Warner blamed a 7 percent drop in Q1 revenues in part on poor ad sales at AOL. Ad dollars at AOL fell 20 percent compared to Q1 2008. AOL revenues plummeted 23 percent to $867 million in the quarter. In addition to the 20 percent drop in ad revenues, the firm reported a 27 percent decline in subscription revenues. The company’s ad business has been hit from multiple angles. As many online media firms have experienced, AOL has seen falling display ad revenues. However, the firm also reported declines in its third-party ad network and paid search businesses.

Google iPhone App Update (With Added Ninja)
The Google Mobile App for iPhone just got an update. This new version includes: Speed improvements for search by voice. Support for British and Australian accents. Various bug fixes. Longer version number. Ninja. Ninja!?! I’m not sure whether this is a genuine hidden Easter Egg or whether it just appears in the list for a bit of fun, like the reference to the longer version number. I even tried searching for [ninja] using the voice search feature and all it returned was the standard results. Has anyone managed to actually find the ninja?

Morning Reads: Yahoo Layoffs Commence, Twitter Full of Quitters
Yahoo has begun layoffs of between 600 and 700 employees, according to tech and gossip blog lalawag. The cuts are on schedule, as Yahoo said during its Q1 earnings call eight days ago that it would notify staffers within two weeks. More than half of Twitter joiners fail to return to the service a month after signing up. Nielsen Online reports retention rate for micro-blogging service is now about 40 percent, posing a challenge to its prospects. That’s actually up from a retention rate below 30 percent over the past 12 months. Those bleak return-rate will make it hard for Twitter to achieve reach in the long term. According to Nielsen Online VP David Martin, “a retention rate of 40 percent will limit a site’s growth to about a 10 percent reach figure. To be clear, a high retention rate doesn’t guarantee a massive audience, but it is a prerequisite.”

Google News Automatically Tweeting Stories @GoogleNews
The Google News Blog announced they have joined Twitter to automatically post links to top stories on Twitter via @GoogleNews. Many news sites automatically post stories to Twitter as well, but Google News recently started to do this as well. I believe Google News also powers @News_By_Robots, but I do not have official conformation on this.

Googles New Chrome Ads: Trippy
Of the 11 short films Google commissioned to promote its Chrome browser, more than half appear to have been conceived in an opium dream. Below are a three of the more out-there videos, so you can judge for yourself. Only one, You and Your Browser, is cute in the way I associate with Google’s past animated ads. Not that I’m critical. Overall I think the effort is a fun way to build buzz for a product that hasn’t been talked about as much as the company might have liked.
